163, 190) Alta, Buena Vista County. The Iowa Falls and Sioux City Railroad Town Land and Lot Company founded Alta in 1872. There are two possible reasons for the naming of the town. One is that it was named after the daughter of John Blair, Altai. The other is that it was named for its altitude, since the town is located on the crest of the divide between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Alta was incorporated on October 11, 1878. (163, 302, 318, 438) Alta Vista, Chickasaw County. The town was initially named Elk Creek.
The town was established as the county seat in 1841, and named in honor of Andrew Jackson. Andrew was incorporated on August 4, 1863. (21, 438) Anita, Cass County. Anita was originally established in 1869 at the direction of Lewis Beason, who owned the property. He sold the property to Frank Whitney, B. F. Allen, and John P. Cook, who then registered the town site on November 10, 1870. In the summer of 1869 a number of railroad ofﬁcials were eating dinner at Lewis Beason’s home when the subject of the new station and its probable name was discussed.
