Case Example Anna is a school counselor working with juniors and seniors in a high school. The district is in an area of the city that is economically middle to low income and ethnically diverse. The counselor who had been in Anna's position and then retired told Anna that it was easiest to just send all the students to the local community college since none of their students make it through college anyway. However, Anna felt a strong obligation to make sure that all her students had access and encouragement to consider all their options for post-high school training.

Examples include gender, people who are over Chapter 2 • Multiculturalism and Diversity in Counseling age 65 who are referred to as senior citizens, people who are gay or lesbian, people who are of a particular religion, people with a particular type of disability such as a hearing impairment or autism, and so on. These variables of diversity occur independently of ethnicity.
